Before the opening performance of “The Little Mermaid”, we checked in with the Director, Kathryn Noser, to ask her about the show.
Question 1: Why did you want to direct this show?
The Little Mermaid is such a well-loved a fun story. I was excited for the opportunity to bring it to life.
Question 2: How would you describe your vision for this production?
I wanted to present a vibrant setting that would capture the audience visually, as well introduce patrons to the traditional Hans Christian Anderson version of the story, which differs slightly from the well-known musical version.
Question 3: How has the rehearsal process been for this show? What has been exciting? What has been challenging?
The rehearsal process for this production was different than a lot of shows I have done previously, because we had several actors for whom this is their first time on stage. With the help of our Assistant Director, Dano Colon, we played a lot of warm up games to get actors comfortable on stage and think about character development and choices. It was exciting to see the show come together with this talented cast getting their “sea legs”.
Question 4: What has been your favorite moment so far?
My favorite moment is hard to say, but seeing the way this cast and crew has gelled and formed a family has been awesome. Actually, the night of tech rehearsal, I had to leave about 15 minutes into the rehearsal due to a family medical emergency. This cast and crew was so awesome that I didn’t worry for one second about whether things were getting done. I knew that I had left the production in capable hands. The care and support they showed was awesome, and the production quality didn’t suffer in the least. I’m supremely proud of our Little Mermaid family and the talent and dedication they bring!
Question 5: What should the audience be excited about seeing or experiencing at your show?
This is a fun, vibrant show, with wonderful characters, and a timeless story of love and sacrifice. It’s a great opportunity to introduce children to the magic of live theater, or revisit a classic story you read as a kid. Plus, if you haven’t visited our new space, what are you waiting for?
