After the opening of Describe the Night we checked in with Director Randall Packer to ask about the show.
Question 1: Why did you want to direct this show?
Describe the Night is one of the best written scripts I have ever read. It uses historical fact and people as a jumping off point to explore the nature and malleability of truth, and the threads that connect people over generations. The play is both hilariously funny and heartbreaking.
Question 2: How would you describe your vision for this production?
The biggest challenge in directing this production was fitting the temporal and geographic scope into a small playing space. Through the use of a minimalist set and projections, I think we have accomplished that goal.
Question 3: How has the rehearsal process been for this show?
The cast is incredibly talented and brings these characters to life, both in the historic scenes and those that drift into magical realism. They bring to life the relationships and desires (realized or not) of these people, and make every moment, no matter how surreal, believable.
Question 4: What has been your favorite moment so far?
Working on this play with this cast has been one of the most satisfying experiences I have had as a director. I appreciate The Company OnStage’s willingness to tackle such challenging material, and I am grateful for the opportunity to direct this production.
