Interview with the Director of “Kid Frankenstein,” Kathryn Noser

After the opening of “Kid Frankenstein,”  adapted by Kathryn Schultz Miller, we checked in with the Director, Kathryn Noser, to ask about the show.

Question 1: Why did you want to direct this show?

First and foremost, I have a passion for theater for young audiences. There is something special about the child’s imagination and their excitement when they come to see a show. For many of our young audience members, the Company OnStage provides their first exposure to live theater, so I love to see their reactions and I always want it to be a special memory for them. Secondly, I love working with young actors. They bring such joy to a production! When I read the script, I knew that it was going to be a lot of fun. It’s a well written script that takes a familiar character – Frankenstein – and “brings him to life” in a whole new way. I mean, what can you expect when you combine a science fair project with a mysterious package from Transylvania? Chaos and fun!

Question 2: How would you describe your vision for this production?

I wanted the show to have a little bit of a comic book feel to it. Allison Rozell created some absolutely awesome set pieces that are the perfect backdrop for the production, and the talented cast absolutely makes this show one you don’t want to miss!

Question 3: How has the rehearsal process been for this show? What has been exciting? What has been challenging?

The rehearsal process was a blast. It’s always so much fun to see characters come to life, and the special energy and little idiosyncrasies each cast member brings to their role, or roles.

Question 4: What has been your favorite moment so far?

Honestly, my favorite moment of the process happens off-stage when I see my cast and crew really start to gel and become a little family. But on the stage, I have to say there are too many moments I love to choose just one!

Question 5: What should the audience be excited about seeing or experiencing at your show?

They should get ready to be blown away by this cast. We’ve got some awesome talent on the stage – from the kids and adults alike! Get ready to clap and cheer, and maybe, just maybe, the audience will be able to help defend the world from a hideous beast (who’s actually quite a good boy – just give him a chance!)

Bonus Question: Who in the show is most like their character? Who’s the least?

Most like their character… Ella, who plays Frankie’s best friend Igor… I mean IRMA. Both characters are sweet, sassy, faithful to their friends, and both have a love of candy!  Least like their characters… my bullies!! Seneca and Izzy Lyster, who play our bullies, T-Bone and Barbie Cue, are smart, sweet, helpful, and kind… most unlike their characters on stage who aren’t so bright, and a definitely not very nice!
