After the opening of “Blithe Spirit,” by Noël Coward, we checked in with the Director, Mike Marlowe, to ask about the show.
Question 1: Why did you want to direct this show?
I always find English playwrights a challenge. The hard is what makes it special.
Question 2: How would you describe your vision for this production?
All productions have an original concept. However, during the journey to completion many new discoveries and ideas are realized and incorporated into the show, making it very different from the original blueprint. …. but that’s what makes it fun.
Question 3: How has the rehearsal process been for this show? What has been exciting? What has been challenging?
Everyone in the cast has worked hard. I knew upfront that the line load was tremendous and would require so much extra work that most actors wouldn’t be used to it. The most challenging part for everyone was getting off book and the most exciting part was watching and observing as the actors could now let their characters make new discoveries.
Question 4: What has been your favorite moment so far?
This is where the fun really begins. As the actors now are really listening to each other and many great moments start happening.
Question 5: What should the audience be excited about seeing or experiencing at your show?
British humor and the work of Noel Coward.
Bonus Question: Who in the show is most like their character? Who’s the least?
Lauren Hainley playing Madame Arcarti is the most like her character. There’s a cast of 7 actors so the answer to who is the least is a 6 way tie.
