The holidays are a funny time, aren’t they? They invite us to slow down, connect with loved ones, and soak in the warmth of community, while also sweeping us up in energy, chaos, and the inevitable “how did it get this late already?!” feeling. This year, Company Onstage’s holiday productions capture both sides of that experience, delivering theatre that is not only full of heart and humor but also full of the unexpected. Think you have seen every holiday story? Think again.
First up, we have ’Twas the Night Before Christmas by Ken Ludwig, the literary genius behind comedic favorites like Moon Over Buffalo and Lend Me a Tenor. In this story, Ludwig brings his signature humor to the classic poem we all know: “’Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.” But Amos, a clever little mouse whisking up some holiday treats, begs to differ. He and his human friend, Emily, haven’t gone to bed yet because what’s the point? Santa didn’t even bother showing up last Christmas! But hope is not lost when Calliope, a spirited member of the Elf-B-I (and yes, there are plenty more puns to enjoy!), arrives to convince them to track down Santa’s Naughty-or-Nice list and save the holiday. This magical, interactive experience delights kids of all ages and features relatable moments adults are sure to enjoy too. Bring the whole family to join this ragtag team of Santa hunters on a journey full of audience interaction, laugh-out-loud moments, and a glimpse of how we pull off a scene on an airplane… on stage!
Next, get ready for Every Christmas Story Ever Told (and then some!) by Michael Carleton, James Fitzgerald, and John K. Alvarez. This whirlwind comedy crams every holiday story you know, and a few you do not, into one fast-moving, side-splitting show. When a group of actors grows tired of A Christmas Carol, they decide to invent a brand-new play on the spot, blending favorites like Rudolph and Frosty with fun facts and fables from around the world. The result? A hilariously chaotic reminder that the holiday season is as unpredictable as it is magical.
For many people, a holiday show is their first introduction to the magic of live theatre, and it is easy to understand why. The season invites us to gather, to share stories, and to rediscover the magic of child-like imagination. This holiday season, make new memories, or continue a beloved tradition, by joining us at Company Onstage. We look forward to welcoming you to our theatre family!
