After the opening of “Tomás and the Library Lady” adapted by José Cruz González, from the book by Pat Mora, we checked in with the Director, Crystal Mata, to ask her about the show.
Question 1: Why did you want to direct this show?
Tomás is very near and dear to my heart. I first saw the production with Brave Little Theatre back in 2013. I immediately fell in love with the story. Being Latina, I recognized and remembered all too well having the same feelings as a kid. Feeling lost and confused just because you didn’t understand the language well. It really made me feel for him. That’s the type of art I like to present. That’s why I wanted to direct it. My goal is to always present theatre that makes you feel something. You may not always like what you feel but you’re gonna feel it.
Question 2: How would you describe your vision for this production?
It would be the world through the eyes of kids. Everything is kind of thrown together and made from household items as an homage to the days of arts and crafts. The library has lots of colorful books that catch your eye and really keep you engaged.
Question 3: How has the rehearsal process been for this show? What has been exciting? What has been challenging?
It’s been exciting to see the actors get excited. Seeing them really embrace the character has been a riot.
It’s been challenging sharing a stage. I love the flexibility of kids shows for that. You can really put them in any space and make them work.
Question 4: What has been your favorite moment so far?
The Puppets… They make me smile every time.
Question 5: What should the audience be excited about seeing or experiencing at your show?
You’re gonna see everything a kids show has to offer! There are many sections of the shows that are bilingual (Spanish and English). But don’t worry, everything is translated for you. There’s music, food, singing, puppets and books! Lots and lots of BOOKS! You’ll get to see the excitement of discovering your first book, relive the moment your family had to move, and the true joy of rooting for the underdog.
Bonus Question: Who in the show is most like their character? Who’s the least?
I think Roberto might be the most like Tomás. Very imaginative and shy. And they both definitely know when to stick up for themselves!
Barbara!!! She is the sweetest, kindest, most warm-hearted person I have ever met, especially towards kids but when she’s that Nightmare Teacher…Ooooo… Gives me chills.
